Tuberculosis Risk Factors

Tuberculosis is a common deadly infectious disease. If it's left untreated, tuberculosis will kills more than half of its victims. People who at risk of tuberculosis are:
  • Immune system
    People with lower immune system has a higher risk in getting tuberculosis, includes those who consume immunosuppressive drugs or have AIDS. 
  • Substance abuse
    Those who using drugs or alcohol for a long period may weaken their immune system and its make the easier getting tuberculosis
  • Contact with someone who have tuberculosis
    If you often have a close contact with people who diagnosed with tuberculosis for quite long time, you may getting tuberculosis from them, since tuberculosis spread through air when tuberculosis patient cough, spit or speaking.
  • Age
    When someone getting older, their immune system also lower.
  • Diabetes Mellitus
    People with diabetes mellitus has greater risk for developing active tuberculosis up to four times compared to person without diabetes mellitus. This risk will get higher in persons with insulin-dependent or poorly controlled diabetes.
  • Weight
    People who have a low body weight also associated with risk of tuberculosis. People who had BMI below 18.5 increases the tuberculosis risk up to three fold.
